The older sister of a young autistic man is appealing for birthday cards to help her brother celebrate his 21st birthday.

James Weir, from Bolton, will be turning 21 next month and Sister Appeals To Help Autistic Brother With No Friends Celebrate 21st JAMESis pretty excited about celebrating his milestone birthday.

However, because of his condition he struggles to socialise and make friends which is breaking his family’s hearts as he has no-one to celebrate with.

His older sister Lucy, determined to see her little brother smile on his big day, decided to do something about it.

Posting an appeal on Facebook, Lucy asked people to help surprise James by sending him a birthday card or a message.

Lucy wrote:

This is James. My not-so-baby brother and he is turning 21 on the 30th November.

James has autism and this makes it difficult for him to make friends and socialise. He gets anxious in social situations and finds it hard to communicate effectively with others.

Sadly, James has no friends and it breaks our hearts.

So, I have come up with an idea/surprise for his birthday. I wondered if you kind folk out there will share this post and send James a birthday message or card.

Even if he only got a few I know he’d be over the moon.

I want to make his milestone birthday extra special and put a big smile on that handsome face. Thank you everybody.

The post has since gone viral on social media with people replying offering to send James cards, make him a cake and send presents.

Lucy spoke to UNILAD about why she decided to make the appeal.

She said:

Most lads would be going out and partying for their 21st but sadly James cant do that which breaks our hearts.

I want to make it as special as I possibly can considering the situation.

I wanted to make his 21st one to remember.

He loves geography and I thought he could get cards from all over the globe.

Sister Appeals To Help Autistic Brother With No Friends Celebrate 21st Lucy 2James, who will be celebrating his birthday on November 30, is currently at college and ‘dreams of having a job but feels nobody will employ him because of his autism’.

Lucy and his family have also planned a birthday meal to celebrate his occasion.

She added:

He will be receiving gifts that fuel his interests: titanic, dinosaurs, astronomy, planes or automobiles.

We will give him the cards as a surprise and will share his reaction. I know he’ll be over the moon.

James has no idea that the surprise is coming and we can’t wait to see his smile!

Lucy never expected her appeal to go viral but is delighted it has.

She told UNILAD:

I have been totally overwhelmed. So many emails and kind gestures have come my way.

We are keeping it all a surprise for James but its so hard to not tell him.

He’s very shy but also has always wanted to do something to go ‘viral’.

People have offered tickets to days out and sent presents. I can’t thank people enough – it puts a tear in my eye.

Our eyes are welling up over here too!

Caroline Gardner to send hundreds of cards to curb loneliness among the elderly

Having trialled the campaign in a small way last year, this year Caroline Gardner is ramping up on its Give to Give activity.

For the second year running, greeting card and lifestyle brand company, Caroline Gardner has kicked off a Give to Give campaign which will help to stave off loneliness among the elderly this Christmas by harnessing help from schoolchildren. Partnering with AgeUK Westminster and local school St Paul’s on their long-standing Christmas lunch delivery scheme, Caroline Gardner is to gather over 400 Christmas messages for personal Christmas cards to an elderly person.

School children and volunteers will hand deliver the handwritten cards together with a Christmas lunch with many giving their time to share part of Christmas Day with those who might otherwise see nobody.

This year’s activity follows on from the success of the trial campaign in 2016 and Caroline Gardner is keen to engage help from those in the card trade too this year. “We are appealing to Caroline Gardner customers once again to give a message so we can give a Christmas card to an elderly person this Christmas,” urged Luca Bridges, senior sales and marketing coordinator for Caroline Gardner.

Every year, over 500,000 over 60s spend the festive season alone (stat: AgeUK), and a shocking 370,000 over 75s feel lonely every day of the year. It’s predicted that by 2030, 40% of all elderly people will feel lonely on a daily basis.

Anyone wanting to reach out to an older person in need of some love, can go onto the Caroline Gardener website and leave a kind Christmas message, and the Caroline Gardner team will do the rest, turning your message into a personalised Christmas card.

“Give to Give is sending good wishes and festive cheer to the people who need it the most,” says Luca. “As a company who creates a lot of cards, we thought this would be a meaningful way to do something with the things we have in excess.”

Artikel samenvatten

Verken het artikel. Lees de kopjes en eerste zinnen. Zoek belangrijke woorden die je nog niet kent of begrijpt op in een woordenboek. Stel jezelf vragen over het artikel.

Bepaal de structuur van het artikel. Lees de inleiding en het slot. Hieruit blijkt welke onderwerpen in de kern belangrijk zijn. Vat de inleiding en het slot elk in één zin samen.

Lees het artikel zeker twee keer door. Een alinea gaat vaak over een deelonderwerp van de hele tekst. Dit onderwerp wordt meestal aan het begin of einde van de alinea aangekondigd met een stelling of vraag en afgesloten met een conclusie of samenvatting. Vaak heeft een schrijver in elke alinea wel iets belangrijks te melden dat in je samenvatting moet terugkomen.

Denk kritisch na over de inhoudelijke verbanden tussen de alinea's, waarvan je de kern al hebt ontdekt. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan oorzaak/gevolg-relaties, vergelijking/contrast, probleem/oplossing en andere structuren. Geef de verbanden duidelijk in je samenvatting aan met behulp van signaalwoorden.

Enkele suggesties om kritisch te denken over het artikel:

  • Waarom is dit artikel geschreven? Zorg dat het antwoord op deze vraag blijkt uit de samenvatting.
  • Voor wie is het artikel geschreven?
  • Door wie is het artikel geschreven? Wat is de achtergrond van de auteur? Is hij subjectief? Wat is zijn gezichtspunt?
  • Wat is de bedoeling van de auteur? Als je dit begrijpt ben je beter in staat hoofdzaken van bijzaken te onderscheiden.
  • Waar en wanneer plaats je het artikel? Wat is de context waarin het geschreven is?
  • Hoe onderbouwt de auteur zijn beweringen? Hoe zou zijn plan kunnen worden uitgevoerd?
  • Wat zijn de belangrijkste beweringen en argumenten? Zijn deze juist?

Vat het artikel in zijn geheel in één zin samen. Een eerste concept-samenvatting kun je nu als volgt construeren:

  1. Begin met de zin die het hele artikel samenvat.
  2. Schrijf daaronder de zinnen die de opeenvolgende alinea’s samenvatten.
  3. Breng structuur en verbanden tussen de delen aan, bijvoorbeeld met signaalwoorden.

Schrijven is schrappen. Verwijder herhalingen en overbodige informatie. Probeer alles zo kort en kernachtig mogelijk te formuleren.

Controleer of de samenvatting je belangrijkste vragen over het artikel beantwoordt.

Lees de samenvatting nog eens na en maak er een vloeiende tekst van. Laat de samenvatting aan een klasgenoot of iemand anders lezen. Begrijpen zij wat er staat?

Eigen informatie toevoegen?

Wanneer je voor jezelf een samenvatting maakt als onderdeel van het actief verwerken van de stof, dan mag je argumenten en inzichten toevoegen. Het kan een goede manier zijn om verbanden te leggen tussen bestaande kennis, onderdelen van de leerstof en nieuwe inzichten die je gaandeweg ontwikkelt.

Een handig hulpmiddel om een artikel samen te vatten is het driekolommenschema. In elk vak in het schema schrijf je één zin die het betreffende deel van de tekst samenvat.

Als je een goed schema gemaakt hebt dan zou je in staat moeten zijn de tekst in grote lijnen na te vertellen aan de hand van het schema. Doe dit als controle.

Je kunt een visueel schema gebruiken als basis voor je samenvatting. Dit is met name nuttig bij complex materiaal dat je diepgaand moet bestuderen voor je het kunt samenvatten.
