Extreme Sports & Hobbies - Text (nodig voor Task 1 en 4)

In the tekst below, you are going to read about some examples of extreme sports. To do these sports you need nerves of steel and a certain amount of madness! They range from fun family activities to extremely risky sports! - please stay safe! Some of the names of the sports are hyperlinks to some more information.

- Hang gliding is a sport where you hang from a hang glider (it's like a large wing) and the glider is launched from a hill. It is not motorised and it glides in air currents - the idea is to stay gliding for as long as possible.

- Extreme ironing is the art of ironing in the most ridiculous and extreme places, from on the top of a mountain, to a deserted motorway!

- Marathons are long-distance running races.  Anyone can compete (although you have to have at least some degree of fitness). You can try local marathons, larger scales ones like the London Marathon, or go extreme with marathons across the globe such as the Great Wall of China marathon, desert marathons and polar ice cap marathons!

- Storm chasing is where (crazy) people track down and follow tornadoes (usually), hurricanes, and all kinds of extreme storms. There are also people who do this as scientific research, but mainly it's for the adventure.

- Parkour / free running is all about efficient movement around obstacles, focussing on speed going from A to B. Free running is a variation of parkour that focuses more on the creativity of moves/tricks and self-expression. Both sports are mainly done in a city because there are lots of structures and obstacles to make use of.

- Limbo skating is a new sport in India. People are kind of roller skating under cars and moving objects. You need to be very flexible and have a good balance.

- Train surfing is an illegal sport, train surfing involves riders climbing or "surfing" on the outside of a moving train or subway. The practice is a serious issue in South Africa, where many young people have been killed or injured. The 'sport' was made popular in the 1980s in Germany, where it was called ‘S-Bahn Surfing’.

- Airkicking is a strange extreme sport where a human catapult launches individuals over 8 meters in the air into a swimming pool. The person is sitting in a specially constructed seat at the back end of the catapult arm and 3,2,1…liftoff! The water (8 to 10 bar of air pressure) shoots the person 8 meters high through the air for a cool and refreshing splashdown in a swimming pool.

- Zorbing Ball. Throwing yourself down a hill in a giant ball, or ‘Zorbing”, is one of the latest extreme sports to sweep the world. This bizarre sport, invented in 2000, involves a giant plastic ball, which has two skins, one inside the other. The person ‘zorbing’ is in the area between the skins, which is pumped up with air.
Like a number of other extreme sports, such as bungee jumping, ‘zorbing’ originated in New Zealand. There are two different ways to zorb – one is ‘zorbing’ inside the ball, and two is "hydrozorbing", which involves putting water in the ball, which zorbers can slide around on as it rolls.
