From San Francisco to New York
In the Netherlands everything is close. The distance between Groningen and Maastricht is only 336 kilometres (three hundred and thirty-six). But what about the United States of America? Everything is much bigger there. What about the distance between San Francisco and New York? How many kilometres (or miles, if you like) are there between these two cities? Are they close or far? Today we're going to find out!
Basis
Task 1
Intro
"On September 10th, 1913, the Lincoln Highway, the first paved road in the U.S. that reached from one coast to another, was laid out. It took until 1927 to complete, but the highway system of the United States was born that day. After that, travelling from one city to another in the U.S. would never be the same."
1. Read the intro above (=hierboven). Write the numbers in orange in full (=voluit in Engelse woorden).
Help!
There are four different means of transport (=transport/vervoersmiddelen) in order to travel from San Francisco to New York. Use the internet to search for your answers to the questions below (hieronder). Write your answers in English in your Google Docs document, Word or notebook.
Help!
2. What is the distance between San Francisco and New York (city) in km/miles? Write the numbers in full.
3. Which four means of transport are there in order to travel from San Francisco to New York?
4. Which of those four means of transport do you think is cheapest to travel from San Francisco to New York?
5. Which do you think is fastest to travel from San Francisco to New York?
Task 2
Finished? Study these personal pronouns. We want you to know them by heart (=uit het hoofd).
Hiervoor gebruiken we het werkwoord 'can'. Na can of can't volgt het hele werkwoord. Kies tussen can of can't.
3. Fill in the correct answer. Use can/can’t.
Task 3
Watch this video about San Francisco and answer the following questions. You may hit pause whenever you're watching the video to answer the questions. You can also slow the video down with the YouTube settings. Again, answer the questions in English in your Google Docs document, Word document or notebook.
Tip: read the questions before you start watching so you know what to look for!
1. How many neighbourhoods does San Francisco have? Write the numbers in full.
2. Which five neighbourhoods of San Francisco are shown in this video?
3. Which neighbourhood is known as 'the Latin heart' of San Francisco?
4. Where can you find the sea lions?
5. Which neighbourhood is famous for its 1960's 'hippie atmosphere'? (=nineteen sixties)
6. How many visitors does the Golden Gate Park have each year? Write the numbers in full.
7. Which one of these neighbourhoods would you like to visit? Why?
Task 4
Imagine you live in San Francisco and you are going on holiday to New York for one week. You have saved $1000 (a thousand) for your holiday. You need to pay for your travel (return trip = retourtje), you need a place to stay, you need to eat and drink in New York and maybe you want to go shopping or visit museums.
1.*Which means of transport would you choose? Why?
2. Which hotel would you like to stay in? Why?
3. At which restaurant are you going to eat on your first day in New York? Why?

Don't forget, you only have $1000 to spend on your holiday! Write down in English how you're going to spend the money in your notebook or in a separate Word Document.
* Challenge: Choose one of the means of transport and actually find out the details of how you can get from San Francisco to New York. When do you leave/arrive, how much does it cost, where will you sleep/stop along the road? Include all the details for your trip. Write the numbers in full.
Task 5
Ask your classmate three questions on their dream holiday destination in English. When you are finished you can swap with a classmate. Try to answer each other’s questions in English as well. Don’t forget to write down your questions and answers too.
Uitbreiding
Task 6 - Writing assignment
You are going to write a short e-mail to your friend Sam in Australia. Sam is doing a project for English class: they are going to give a presentation about New York and that’s why they really need your help!
