Models You Can Count On is the first unit in the Mathematics in Context number strand. This unit builds on students’ informal knowledge of ratios, part-whole relationships, and benchmark percents. The goal of this unit is to introduce and develop several number models that students can use as tools to solve problems. Students use these number models in various problem contexts and develop their conceptual understanding of the various representations of number, such as fractions, decimals, and percents, and the connections between them. In addition, proportional reasoning is developed gradually and is integrated with other representations of rational numbers. Students use informal strategies and models, rather than formal algorithms, in this unit.
