5.4. Know where your data comes from

A common misconception is that AI tools, such as ChatGPT, ‘search the internet’ for their answers. This is not true! Most AI models are trained on large amounts of text up to a certain point in the past. These models generate responses based on patterns in that data. They do not have live access to current information unless the AI tools are connected to a search engine. Examples of such tools include MS Copilot or Perplexity.

It’s therefore important to be aware that AI tools do not guarantee factual accuracy. AI tools can sound convincing but may ultimately hallucinate. Examples of hallucinations include fabricated sources, incorrect data, or made-up citations. This is especially problematic in an academic context.

Tip: always use AI output as a starting point for further research, not as a final product. Verify facts, check sources, and be critical of tone, biases, and completeness of the information. AI tools can be powerful aids, but you remain responsible for the content you use.
