Dordrecht

Dordrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, officially founded in 1220, but the story actually began a few centuries earlier. It was a place where rivers converged, and that turned out to be a brilliant move. Merchants from all over Europe came to Dordrecht to trade their goods. Imagine small boats loaded with wool, wine, timber, and even fish, all floating down the rivers surrounding the city.

The city was granted city rights and grew rapidly. Dordrecht became the place where the powerful Counts of Holland conducted their affairs. And of course, like any good city history, there were also some battles and floods along the way. In 1421, for instance, the Saint Elizabeth’s Flood occurred, a massive flood that drastically changed the landscape.

Today, Dordrecht is a charming city with about 120,000 inhabitants. The historic center still exudes the atmosphere of the past, with its narrow streets and old warehouses, but at the same time, it’s a lively city with cozy terraces and beautiful shops. So, in a way, Dordrecht is a city that perfectly combines tradition with modernity!
