Function:
Communication Highway: The primary function of the spinal cord is to make a pathway between the brain and the body. Sensory neurons carry information from various parts of the body to the spinal cord, where it is then given to the brain for processing. Motor neurons, on the other hand, transmit signals from the brain to muscles, allowing us to move and carry out various actions.
Reflex Actions: The spinal cord also plays a crucial role in reflex actions, which are rapid and involuntary responses to stimuli. When you touch something hot, for example, sensory neurons in your skin send a signal to the spinal cord, bypassing the brain. In response, the spinal cord quickly sends a message to motor neurons, causing your muscles to contract and move your hand away from the heat source. This rapid reflex action occurs without conscious thought and helps protect our bodies from potential harm.
