Skimming
WHAT
Look at a text and search for clues what it is about without reading the actual text. Think of headline, subtitles, pictures/photos, subscripts, striking words, bold, italic or underlined words etc.
WHY
Skimming is useful to save time and energy. It gives you a great outset for reading any text as it gives you a general outline what the text is about. |
HOW
Your teacher will provide you with a text. Alone: Take a good look at the text, don't read the body of the text yet! Highlight striking elements such as:
In pairs: discuss the highlighted elements. Do you both agree on them? Together write a short prediction of the text using only the highlights: what do you think the text is about? Don't read the body of the text just yet! Alone: Now read the text carefully. Was your prediction correct? In pairs: take one of your sheets and cut out the highlighted elements. Paste the pieces together in the same order as the original, leaving out the body of the text. Swap your newly pasted text with another pair. Now each pair has to make a prediction what the text of the other pair is about. In groups: Discuss with the other pair the prediction. Did they predict correctly? Evaluate the assignment: is skimming useful to you? Why?
