What is the Past Simple?

Look at the video, read the explanation or look at the pictures. It's up to you which ones you want to use to learn about the Past Simple.

The video:

Text and explanation:

We use the Past Simple when we talk about something that happened in the past and is over now.

When you see these words there is a high chance the verb is past simple: yesterday, last night, last year, last week, a long time ago, in 2019.

It has 2 forms: regular and irregular.

Regular:

If the verb is regular, all you have to do is take the whole verb and put -ed behind it.

Like: walk - walked   talk- talked

Uitzonderingen: If verbs end in -y with a consonant (medeklinker) in front of it, the verb changes in -ied. Like: marry- married, carry - carried. BUT if a vowel (klinker) is before the -y, it stays -yed. Like: stay - stayed.

Irregular:

You need to study these well. You can find them in your workbook on page 270 in the second colom. Let op BE. I/HE/SHE/IT  was. You/They  were.

There are a lot of irregular verbs in the video below. Look at it to become familiar with these verbs or look at them on page 270 of your workbook.

Text and explanation:

We use the Past Continuous to talk about things that started in the past but are still going on.

It looks like this: was/were + verb + ing.

So for example: I was singing in the shower when my mother walked in.

Questions look like this: Was I walking the dog when it started to rain?

Negatives look like this: We weren't watching TV when the doorbell rang.

Words that can signal the Past Continuous are: while, always, constantly and forever.
