Today you're going to write a letter. You get to choose from three subjects. The letters are about something that happened. So use Past Simple ;) from the last lesson.
Lesson goal: at the end of this lesson you're able to write a letter in a friend about something you have done.
To see what a standard letter is supposed to look like you're going to do an excersize. What do you start with? How do you end it?
You're going to get expressions and vocab from me that will help you write your letter.
This letter you're going to write in Write and Improve. The program will indicate if you made any mistakes. Did you make mistakes? Fix them and hand in your text in Google Classroom and Padlet. Why Classroom and Padlet? The text in Classroom will be given feedback by me. The texts in Padlet will be given peerfeedback. More about Padlet later.
First we're going to look at the format of a standard letter. Do you remember what it looks like? Do the excersize and find out!
Here are some general expressions that you can use in your letter to express yourself:
Possible beginnings to your letter after Dear,
How can you comment on something?
Endings before Kind regards,
Some useful vocab for this week's writing assignments
Pumpkin carving - pompoen snijden Go door to door - langs de deur gaan
Covid19 - corona Verkleden - dress up
thrilling - spannend terrifying - angstaanjagend
Sensation - sensatie true crime - echte misdaad (verhalen)
You're going to choose one of the three subjects to write about. Then you're going to https://writeandimprove.com/ and write your letter.
The program will give you feedback. Based on the feedback fix any mistakes and hand it in on Google Classroom in the map 'schrijfopdracht les 3'. Don't forget your groupnumber and the titel of the subject you chose.
The subjects you can choose from are:
Covid19 is a party killer
You write a letter to your English friend Many, who you met before Covid19.
Follow the format of the standard letter and tell her:
- ask how she's doing.
- tell her that since september the Netherlands are in lockdown again.
- you tell her that you miss parties.
- you tell her about the last party you went to. Where was it? When was it? Who were you with?
- close your letter the way you have seen in the exercise.
What did you do for Halloween?
You write a letter to Kyle, an American friend. Halloween happened last weekend and you want to know if he had fun.
Follow the format of the letter and tell him:
- ask him how he's doing.
- you ask him if he had a nice/fun Halloween.
- you ask Kyle if hij pompoenen heeft gesneden voor Halloween en langs de deur is gegaan voor trick or treat.
- you tell him what you did for Halloween (if you did nothing, say what kind of film you watched).
- Tell him you hope to hear from him soon and close the letter.
New hobbies
You write to your friend Tom about which new hobbies you have now that you're home often because of corona.
- you open the letter (think back on the excersize)
- you ask how he's doing
- you tell him that you have a new hobby since covid19 because you had to stop playing (choose a sport)
- you tell him you started making TikToks in which you talk about scary stories. Dingen die echt gebeurd zijn en niet te verklaren zijn.
- Je zegt dat je dat soort verhalen eng en spannend vindt.
- Je hoopt snel weer van hem te horen.
- Close the letter the way you saw in the exercise.
