No supplies? No school for local students
Superintendent says kids must have pens, paper
WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio – Dr. Gwendolyn Cooke, principal at Warrensville Heights High School, has closed the school doors to students who don’t have pens, paper and notebooks in their bags.
‘Students must have school supplies like paper and a notebook in order to do their work,’ says Dr. Cooke. ‘But walking around the school in the first week after the summer holidays, I noticed that 3 to 5 percent didn't have anything. That upset me.’
The school says they sent out letters weeks ago, but many parents claim they didn't know that their kids were supposed to bring their own supplies.
'We did not receive any letters, either through the kids or in the mail,' parent Carolyn Jones said. ‘I think it’s ridiculous to tell a child it can’t go to school because of a few pens and notebooks.’
'My daughter has notebooks,' parent John Mikel said. 'She keeps them in her locker, which is just down the hall. But she couldn’t get them, because she was told to stay outside. '
Some of the students are also upset over the new dress code – white T-shirts are no longer allowed.
