Jonathan Thomas, Lloyd’s of London (28.11.2010 Financial Times)
I work at Watkins Syndicate and insure people in all kinds of occupations or pursuits. Sometimes I only cover parts of those people or just very specialised activities that they partake in. For example, I recently wrote a $1m policy for the hair of Troy Polamalu, an American football star who appears in adverts for Head & Shoulders, the shampoo brand.
We often write insurance for very specific things that are deliberately excluded from more general accident and health policies. Thus I might insure things like just the retina of the right eye of a professional sportsman that has been excluded from a policy issued to the player’s team by another insurer. Even more than other kinds of underwriting, setting a price for the risk is just one part of the job. I also have to make sure that the risks – and the circumstances in which a loss can occur – are very accurately described in the policy in order to avoid misunderstandings. The near infinite variations between people means that can sometimes be very exacting.
Everybody wants to hear about the celebrity body-parts policies and the professional sportsmen, but some of the most difficult underwriting presently concerns the very high physical hazards to which charity workers and journalists in Afghanistan expose themselves.
What makes the job interesting is that I have to put myself vicariously in the various jobs of my policyholders to do it. My colleague, Stuart Newcombe, might be taking this to extremes, though. He is a TA Major, who will soon be attached to 3 Para in Afghanistan for six months.
