- Do you know how to read a text?

- Which of the tips below will you be using?

Now that you know how to read a text, and what to do beforehand and afterwards,

let's start reading.

- If you really don't know... look it up in the dictionary!
Read Melanie's story of how she met Charlotte, and answer the questions below.

I had joined a new school, and made a friend with a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl named Charlotte. She told me that I could go to her house after school, so I told my mum and we waited the next morning to find the girl and her parents in the playground before school. Every blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl that walked past, I responded “no,” to my mum, who was nagging me to find the girl. In the end, I just said “yes” at the next girl I saw, despite her not being Charlotte. Her name was Kaylin, and little did I know that 10 years later I would become her god-sister. She is my best friend and I’m so glad I didn’t find Charlotte in time.
A person you just met is telling you about her life. Read the text and answer the questions below.

I would like to tell you, a little bit about some things I like, and then a little bit about some things I don't like. first of all, I really enjoy exercising. Some of my favorite types of exercises are swimming, especially in rivers in the country and in big oceans, because I like to jump over the waves. I also really enjoy dancing. I like dancing to American music, because that's what I know best and I also, like Salsa and Merengue, which are more Latin types of music. I also like to walk in the woods and to explore. I like to walk through forests, and I like to hear rivers.

I enjoy meeting new people too. I like to, find out about different ways of life, what different people think, where they're from, and how they live. probably one of my favorite things are animals. I really love dogs, and cats, and horses. when I was little I always tried to talk my mom in letting me have more animals. But usually she wouldn't. so I think now that I'm going to have my own house, I'll try to get lots of animals. Some things that I don't really like are rude people. Sometimes people are not very nice to strangers, and that makes me feel bad. I also don't really like driving. I tend to get pretty bored in the car. And it seems like it just takes a long time to get there. one final thing I don't really like is waiting. Sometimes I'm not a very patient person. And I just like to hurry things up.
Let's do some more vocab!

Sean’s New Friend

By: Deborah Lynn

Sean made a new friend at school this year, his name was Caleb and they had lots of fun together. They skateboarded, ran races and even played Wii. One day Caleb invited Sean to a Passover.

“What is Passover?” Sean asked.

“It is a very special Jewish holiday,” Caleb said with a smile, “You will like it, I promise!”

The Passover was in a large room and many people were there. They were dressed up like you would dress up if you were going to go to church.
Caleb and his father wore a small, round hat on their heads. Caleb’s mother put a scarf on her head, as she lit some candles and prayed. Sean couldn’t understand her words.

Caleb asked his father why this night was different than all other nights and his father told the story of Moses. Sean remembered that story from Sunday School. God told Moses to say, “Let my people go.” The king said, “No,” so God sent frogs and flying bugs and all kinds of other things to bother the king until he changed his mind and set God’s people free.

At the Passover they drank grape juice and ate
crackers that had stripes and holes all over it, they called it Matzo. They dipped some green leaves in some salt water, and they tasted something that burned so bad it made

Sean’s eyes have tears in them. Caleb said this was to remind them of the bad times when there was a bad king bossing them around. After that, they tasted something sweet made of apples and Caleb said that helps them remember the happiness of being free! They sang some fun songs, and Caleb’s dad wrapped a piece of Matzo in a napkin. Then do you know what they did? His mother hid it! Then after dinner the children got to go find it and Sean was the lucky one. He was the first to find it and he won two whole dollars! Sean thought this was so fun that he hoped Caleb would invite him again next year, but now, maybe he should invite Caleb to his house for Easter! What do you think?

FRIENDSHIP

Everyone has problems in their life, so everyone needs friends to tell these problems, to solve or just need someone to trust and feel safe near him or her in difficult times. Some of us make friends easily, but there are people who are shy, and it is very difficult for them to make friends. Having friends of your own age is important. These friends tend to look at things the same way you do because they have the same fears, interests, options, problems and worries that you do. Your friends can listen and understand how you feel whether you are dealing with a problem at school or at home.  Your friends are there when you are feeling down, when you are eager of sharing a happy experience. Also, having goofiness and fun with your friends helps you establish good relation with each other.

Friendships have their ups and downs. Even best friends sometimes have misunderstandings and arguments. When things don’t go smoothly between you and a close friend, it does not mean that your friendship is over. It simply means that you both need to feel honesty each other and to express your feelings. Respect and kindness solve all your problems. Have the best days with your friends!

How the Tiger Got his Stripe

A long time ago, when animals still had the power of speech, a white, stripeless tiger, crept to the edge of the jungle and looked out at the paddy fields where the rice grew. He saw a man sitting under a banana tree eating his lunch. Not far away stood a buffalo who was also taking a rest from his work ploughing the fields. The great beast swished his tail to swipe away the flies.

The tiger crept forward on his belly, using his powerful arms to pull himself through the grass, and when he was just behind the buffalo he whispered, “Do not be afraid. I do not come to satisfy my hunger, but to seek your advice. Do tell me the answer to my question – for I am so curious to know. I have been observing the puny little man who is your master. He has no strength, no sharp sense of smell. His hands are not strong and his teeth are not sharp, yet he rules you and makes you work for him. You, on the other hand, are a magnificent beast of great and wonderful strength. You are twenty times his weight and size, and I know to my cost that you can put up a fair fight with the best of the beasts of the jungle. I have heard that the source of man’s power is something called wisdom. So tell me, oh buffalo, what is wisdom? Where does the man get it from?”

The buffalo munched slowly on his grass for a while before answering, “Beats me, I’ve no idea. Why don’t you ask him?”

The tiger saw that he would not get a sensible answer from the buffalo, and so he sprang over the to the man in one great bound, and as he stood before the trembling farmer he said, “Have no fear little man, for I have not come to satisfy my hunger. I am here in search of wisdom. Do answer my question, please, for it perplexes me. What this thing that men call wisdom? What does it look like? Where does it come from? Will you not share some of it with me?”

The man wiped the sweat of fear from his forehead and said as calmly as he could, “Wisdom is very precious. Must I really give some of it to you?”

“The choice is yours,” said the Tiger, “But do you hear that sound? It is my stomach rumbling. I have not slept or eaten for three days, so perplexed have I been by this question, but now I am starting to feel like I could do with a bite to eat. ”

And the man could indeed hear a low rumbling sound. He replied to the tiger, “Well of course I will gladly share my wisdom with you. But I’m afraid I have left it at home today. I must go and fetch it for you. If you come back with me, I am afraid the villagers will take fright. Will you wait here a while?”

The tiger walked around the man menacingly before giving his reply, “I will wait, but be sure to come back, or I will visit you in your field again tomorrow, and next time I might be more hungry than than inquisitive.”

The man started to walk out of the field, but he had taken only a few steps when he turned back and said, “Please forgive me. I am troubled by the thought of leaving a hungry tiger here with my animals. Will you let me tie you to this tree while I am away fetching the wisdom? That way my fears will be at rest.”

The tiger was afraid that the man would change his mind about sharing his wisdom. He thought of the great power that only a little wisdom would give him — how with his strength, and with just a little of man’s wisdom, he would rule every creature that walked, slithered, swam or flew across the world. He wanted this prize so much that he agreed to let the man coil a rope around his body and his legs, and tie him to the trunk of the banana tree.

A little later, the man returned to the field with his three sons. Each carried armfuls of dry straw.

“Here, I have kept my side of the bargain. I have brought you wisdom” said the man, and he and his sons laid the straw on the ground beneath the tiger. Then the man set alight to it. Bright orange flames leaped up and burned the tiger. He roared with pain, until at last the fire seared through the ropes, and he sprang to freedom, and bounded for the river where he soothed his burnt fur in the cooling waters.

In time the wounds of the tiger healed, but for ever more his body bore orange stripes where the flames and burned him, and black ones where the ropes had bound him.

Choosing the right sport for you

Corey and Angie, twin brother and sister, enjoy playing all kinds of outdoor games and sports with their friends. They especially love playing pickup games of basketball and touch football. On particularly nice days, Corey and Angie have been known to kick around the soccer ball, toss around the baseball, or go on long runs.

In just a month the twins will be high school freshmen and neither can figure out which sport to try out for in the fall. Corey is deciding between football, soccer, and cross-country. Angie is debating whether to try her hand at a sport she has never played, like field hockey, or go with one she knows, like soccer or cross-country. They're facing a dilemma a lot of teens face — which sports to play and which sports to give up.

Verbs we use when talking about sports:

DO is used for sports you can do in a group like gymnastics, athletics or aerobics.

Example: To do judo, karate, aikido, yoga and kung fu.

GO is used for sports and activities ending in ing (go+ing)

Example: To go cycling, windsurfing, swimming, jogging, running, skiing, climbing, bowling, and hiking.

PLAY is used for sports where you play to win.

Example: To play soccer, baseball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, rugby, and cricket.

Is she off her rocker?

A SINGLE mum with a love of outdoor sports has sparked outrage — by rock-climbing with her toddler daughter strapped to her back.

Menna Pritchard, 26, who says she believes that "life is about taking risks" has defended her decision to scale sheer rock faces while carrying two-year-old Ffion. The full-time student said: "Some people would say I'm taking more risks than are necessary. But I am very conscious of safety and I would never do anything with Ffion that I thought would put her in danger."

However, despite her claims to respect safety, Menna has been forced to defend a photograph she posted on her blog taken as she climbed a limestone rock face at Three Cliffs Bay in South Wales with Ffion strapped to her back. While the mum and her climbing partner wear safety helmets in the photo, Ffion's head is bare. Health and safety officials criticised her actions saying that she was being irresponsible and placing her child’s life at risk.

But Menna said: "I can appreciate if you didn't realise how safe the environment I was in, it could be worrying, but I was top-roping which means if you fall you don't fall any further than where you came off. It is the safest form of climbing you can do. I was also in a beach environment surrounded by experienced climbers. Health and safety legislation and the “sue and blame” culture mean so many people are nervous and afraid of getting into trouble, and taking small risks. Life is all about risks, whether that's something as simple as getting in your car every day or climbing up a rock face."

Menna split with Ffion's dad when she was three months pregnant and moved to Wales to live with her parents. She is studying for a degree in outdoor education at University of Wales, Trinity St David in Carmarthen and works part-time as an outdoor instructor while juggling her job and education with her love of adventure sports.

Ffion was just four-months-old when Menna carried her up Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales. "She slept through the whole thing," she said. "She was in a front carrier at that time and it really was incredibly safe. Safety is always paramount."

Menna has since walked or climbed with Ffion in The Gower, a coastal beauty spot near Swansea, on the Pembrokeshire coast, and in North Wales. She added: "Rock climbing, kayaking and canoeing are all fairly new to me in the last two years but I feel I am in my element. The idea is that's it's fun and exciting for Ffion too and hopefully I am inspiring her and giving her access to the outdoors. Ever since Ffion was born I have been either trying to do mountain climbing with her or forest walking or doing beach trips. It just felt so good, not only for my physical well-being but also for my state of mind."

MODERN MOM: THE WORST FOODS FOR KIDS
AND
WHAT TO REPLACE THEM WITH

We all know, in general, what foods are good for kids and what foods aren’t (hello Oreo cookies). Here are the seven worst, and what you can replace them with.

Healthy eating is a learned behavior. Teaching your kids good habits from a young age will help them eat healthy throughout their entire lives. Here are seven foods that don't provide any nutritional value for your kids and what you can feed them instead.

OREO COOKIES

… or any processed, packaged cookies, for that matter. Oreo cookies contain roughly 60 calories per cookie, more for the double stuff variety, and 14 grams of sugar per serving. They're not filling, and can easily make a kid sick if they eat too many. Instead, try these healthy gluten-free breakfast cookies — for a fast, on-the-go breakfast or as an after-school snack.

BREAKFAST CEREALS

Cap'n Crunch, Apple Jacks and even Honey Nut Cheerios contain roughly 12 grams of sugar per serving. Starting your kids' day by loading them with sugar will lead to low energy and crankiness down the road. We recommend fruit, oatmeal or smoothies. All three are packed with nutrients and vitamins to give your kids sustainable energy to take them straight into lunch.

FRIED FOODS

Fried foods contain trans fat, which is the worst type of fat for you. It not only raises your bad cholesterol, but it lowers your good cholesterol. Talk about a double-whammy! Instead of frying your food, bake it. Baked fish, homemade baked potato chips and these baked garlic truffle fries are all fantastic, healthier substitutes.

ORDERED PIZZA

While it's super easy to order a pizza on a busy weeknight, it just doesn't cut it in the health department. Pizza is similar to fast food — loaded with fat, calories and carbs and providing relatively no nutritional value. Throw together your own homemade pizza with whole wheat crust, low-fat cheese and veggies. If you have more time, try these healthy quinoa pizza bites

KOOL-AID

One cup of Kool-Aid contains nearly 25 grams of sugar. Kool-Aid, along with soda, juice boxes and other sweetened drinks, can lead to obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Sugar gives kids a burst of energy but leaves them feeling tired and cranky a short while later. Water should always be your child's go-to drink, followed by caffeine-free iced teas, green teas and milk.

Tip: If your child loves juice, dilute it with water. They'll still enjoy the taste with only half the calories and sugar.

CINNAMON ROLLS

Cinnamon rolls and other pastries, such as donuts, muffins and cakes, are loaded with sugar, calories, carbohydrates and possibly trans fats. A much healthier option is whole wheat toast with peanut butter, scrambled eggs with a side of sliced apples or Greek yogurt with fresh berries.

PROCESSED MEATS

Processed meats include lunch meats — such as ham, bologna or turkey — along with bacon, sausage and hot dogs. Processed meats are high in calories and sodium, which leads to water retention and weight gain. Most red meats also contain a cancer-causing ingredient known as sodium nitrite. It's best to avoid processed meats whenever possible and to stick to fresh meats instead — like this chicken adobo sandwich
