Tips

Tips for writing
Read these tips for writing and keep them in mind while doing the exercises.

  • Try to make a planning of your writing: what do you want to say?
    And: in what order (=volgorde)?
  • Try to use words and sentences you already know.
  • See the online dictionaries in the words section if you need to find the correct English word, or if you are unsure about the spelling of a word.
  • If you write your letter on the computer make sure that the spelling checker is on English.

Postcards
Do you send postcards when you're on holiday? What do you write on them?
Have you ever written one in English? You are going to do so in this section.
That is why you get a chance to practise here.

Writing a postcard

Postcard
You are on holiday in Brighton (England).
You have promised an American friend of yours to send him / her a postcard.

Preparation

Task
Write your text on the back of the postcard (a word doc).
Write about:

  1. the weather
  2. the place you stay
  3. something you have done during your holiday.

Don't forget your name! Send your postcard to your teacher: postcardyourname.docx

Booking form
You and your family are going to Wales. You want to go canoeing together.
You find out about 'Blackmountain', a company that organises adventure tours near the place you go on holiday.
Your mother has asked you to fill in the booking form .

Task

  • Download the form and fill it in with the data of your family.
  • Choose the type of canoes you want (depending of the number of people in your family of course).
  • You want to go canoeing on the 20th of July.
  • You want to know if there is a bus service back to where the canoe trip starts.

How much will the canoe trip cost for your family?

Planning an exchange programme
Situation
Your school is organising an exchange programme with an English school from Canterbury. The teachers who organise the programme have asked for the help of pupils to put the programme together. There are two tasks for this situation:

Task 1: Guided tour (in pairs)
Teachers have asked pupils if they know some nice places to show to the English students. Think of three landmarks / places you think are nice to show to people of your age. They should not be further than 45 minutes away (by coach) from your school. Write about 10 lines per landmark / location. Explain why you think this landmark / location is worth visiting. Use your own words!

Task 2: Typically Dutch
In order to prepare the English pupils for their visit in the Netherlands, your English teacher has asked you to write an email to your exchange partner.
In this email you explain something that is typically Dutch. This can be a habit, something from the past, but also a landmark or something else.
If you need inspiration, have a look at the following two websites:

Your email should be ten to fifteen lines.
Think of a good heading and closing for your email.
Send your email to your teacher.

    • In the back of your notebook fold a page: left side = English; right side = Dutch
