Start

  • asking/giving directions
  • asking/giving information
  • at the campsite
  • in a hotel
  • in a souvenir shop

Have fun!

Speaking

Introduction

In 'speaking' you will be working on your speaking skills.

  • First you are going to have a look at some useful expressions
    (warming up).
  • Then you're going to practise a conversation with the help of speech cards and evaluate a conversation of classmates (speech card).
  • Next, you are going to practise your speaking in some real-life situations (speak up).
  • For those who want, there is a class speaking activity on holidays and travel too (class activity).

In these exercises you're going to speak about holidays and travel of course!
With every exercise you do, your speaking skills will improve.

Speak up!

Tips

Before you start speaking:

  • First look at the instructions.
  • Try to think of words and expressions you need.
  • DON'T write out your conversation or talk completely!
  • If you do that, it will just be a writing and reading exercise!

While speaking:

  • Make sure you start a conversation by greeting the other person in a polite way.
  • Look at your partner or at your audience.
  • Speak calmly and not too quietly.
  • You can use a note, but make sure there are only a few words on it!
  • If you don't know a word, you can always explain what you can use it for, or what it looks like.
  • Try to keep on talking, even if you don't really know how you should say something.
  • If you don't understand your partner, you can ask for an explanation, or ask your partner to repeat the question.
  • End a conversation by saying goodbye.

Clue:
if you practise a conversation a second time, it will be much easier!

Warming Up

In this section, you are going to practise some sentences and expressions that you will need for the speaking exercises.
Of course, the words and grammar sections are very important too (and have more exercises) so go back to them for repetition if necessary.

The following questions are about asking and giving directions.

Exercise:Warming up

Exercise:Warming up

Speech card (1)

Speech card
Now you are going to have an actual conversation with someone else.
Imagine you and your partner are in a city. Person A is looking for an ATM (Automated Teller Machine; pinautomaat) and asks Person B for directions.
Person B gives directions.

Practise your conversation at least twice.
Persoon A: Speech card - persoon A .
Persoon B: Speech card - persoon B .

You can use the expressions below:

Speech card (2)

Speech card - beoordeling
After practising twice, do the following things:

  • Find another pair to work with. Act out your conversation.
  • Let the other pair act out their conversation and write down feedback for them.
  • Do the conversation yourself and ask for feedback
  • Discuss what things were good and what you can do better next time.

Speech card - beoordeling

Give the feedback forms to your teacher. You don't have to write down the scores on the workplan.

Have fun!

Giving directions (1)

You now get a chance to practise your speaking in various different situations that are all related to the theme. Try to practise as many as you can!

Subject: Lost

You are going to ask for and give directions in English. Work together with
a classmate. Imagine one of you is a tourist in your city Chattanooga.

In each conversation, person A is in one of the four streets you've written down and needs to go to one of the landmarks you've written down. Make sure all landmarks and all streets are used. Use the map of Chattanooga (see below).

Evaluation
You've done well if:

  • you caught the attention of the other person (to ask for directions).
  • you asked the right questions.
  • you gave the right answers.
  • you could ask for an explanation if necessary.

    • In the back of your notebook fold a page: left side = English; right side = Dutch
  • Continue with WRTS or Duolingo.
