What is this site for?

In this lesson you will explore the English culture. We will have two themes: Music and food. You will learn about these topics and complete exercises in which you will use the information you learned to test your knowledge. And at the end we will do a shot Kahoot to test your knowledge.

How will the exercises work?

At the end of every topic you will get an exercise. These will have 3 levels, level A, B and C. After the videos you will decide which level you want to try. Make sure you don't spent too much time on a level if it's too hard for you or you won't make it in time!

 

I would recommend to start with level A and if that's too easy you can move on to level B or level C if you think that will be more of a challenge for you.

 

If you're not sure whether your answer would count as correct during a test you can always ask me. I will be there in the class to help if you guys need it.

 

After you're done with your exercises of choice you can silently work on something for yourself. In the last 5 minutes of the class we will do a short kahoot to test your knowledge.

There are many different genre's in music, and those all had some kind of influence on the English culture.

What influence did food have?

And for our last topic we will talk about food. Let's repeat what we did before. You will read a text and answer the questions again, but this time it will be about food and it's influence.

Today we will take you on a trip through the different types of food that have influenced the English culture.

Let’s start with the traditional English food. This type of cooking has a long history and is known for its filling meals and delicious tastes. Traditional food includes iconic dishes such as fish and chips, roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, and English breakfast. It shows how England's past and farming practices have influenced its food.

Now, let’s look at the massive influence of Indian food on the English cooking. Indian cuisine has had a big impact on the food in England. You may find many Indian restaurants and dishes all across the country. The spices and flavours used in Indian cooking are also being used in English dishes, adding a twist to the traditional English cooking. Indian curries, naan bread, samosas and other delicious Indian dishes are now enjoyed and loved by people in England.

Next up we have gastropubs. These are special pubs that offer both a casual pub atmosphere and high-quality food. Gastropubs offer elevated pub food with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. They have redefined the pub culture in England and are known for their innovative menus and craft beers.

Let’s dive into the world of fusion food. Fusion restaurants bring together diverse cooking traditions to create unique and exciting flavour combinations. Fusion cooking blends ingredients, techniques and flavours from different cultures. This represents how multicultural modern England is.

For our last topic let’s talk about the farm-to-table movement. this food trend focuses on using ingredients that are nearby and available during certain times of the year. It promotes farming methods that are good for the environment and help preserve resources for the future. The farm-to-table movement helps to create a closer connection between farmers, producers, and consumers. It shows the importance of local farming culture and preserving traditional food production methods.

And this is the end of our trip through the world of food. We have seem glimpses of traditional English cuisine, the flavours of Indian food, the concept of gastropubs, the creativity of fusion cuisine and the farm-to-table movement. Food is not only there to eat, it also shows parts of the past, present and future. It brings people together and tells stories. You can decide your own journey down the food path.

Task: English Culture Showcase

The goal: You will make a creative presentation explaining the influence music, films and food had on the English culture.

How will you do that?

1. You can work in groups or alone, you get to choose.

2. Every person/group has to present their presentation in front of the class next lesson.

3. These things have to be included in the presentation:

- A very short summary of each video from this lesson and what you learned from it.

- Examples of films, musicgenre's and dishes that are named in the videos.

- Creative forms of examples like pictures, video's, recipe's etc.

4. You can use PowerPoint, make a poster, a video etc. You can choose which one you want, as long as it includes the points listed here.
