Introduction to the topic

Imagine that you have plans for later, do you say will or do you say going to? Let's find out!

Instructions

Step 1. Look around this website.

Step 2. Click the heading that says Grammar.

Step 3. Read carefully through the grammar explanation. If you don't understand something, please raise your hand or watch the knowledge clip which you can find under the heading ''Cool down''.

Step 4. After you're done with the explanation, click on the heading 'Quiz'. Use the link that you are given. If the link does not work, please raise your hand.

Step 5. When you are done click the heading with 'extra exercise' and do the exercises. You can choose whether to write down your answers or to fill in the handout.

Step 6. Check your answers yourself.

Step 7. If your desk partner is finished too, do the speaking exercise.

Step 8. Your teacher will explain step 8

Step 9. Click on heading 'Cool down' and use the link to fill out a Google forms.

Grammar

Expressing a Future Action: When To Use “Will” And “Going To”

Both of them refer to future actions. Although in some cases they may seem similar but that is because there are multiple ways of expressing the same thing in English, however most of the time it depends on what you are trying to say.

Beide verwijzen naar toekomstige acties. Hoewel ze in sommige gevallen op elkaar lijken, komt dat omdat er meerdere manieren zijn om hetzelfde in het Engels uit te drukken, maar meestal hangt het af van wat je probeert te zeggen.

What's the difference? 'Will' and 'be going to'

When do you use 'will' and when do you use 'be going to'?

Will + infinitive Be going to + infinitive

A decision at the moment of speaking:
Julie: There's no milk.
John: Really? In that case, I'll go and get some.

Een besluit op het moment van spreken.

A decision before the moment of speaking:

Julie: There's no milk.
John: I know. I'm going to go and get some when this TV programme finishes.

Een besluit vóór het moment van spreken.

A prediction based on opinion:

I think the Conservatives will win the next election.

Een voorspelling op basis van mening.

A prediction based on something we can see (or hear) now:

The Conservatives are going to win the election. They already have most of the votes.

Een voorspelling gebaseerd op iets dat we nu kunnen zien (of horen).

A future fact:

The sun will rise tomorrow.

Een toekomstig feit.

 

For promises / requests / refusals / offers:

I'll help you tomorrow, if you like.

Voor beloften / verzoeken / weigeringen / aanbiedingen.
