Magazine project

Every Monday, you are going to work on making your own magazine in groups of four.

"A magazine is a type of thin book with large pages and a paper cover that contains articles and photographs" (Cambridge Dictionary, 2021).

You will work on this project from January 24 to March 14. This means you will have six weeks in class to finish your magazine.

Goals of this project:

1. You have practiced with writing articles

2. You have practiced with the structure and layout of an article

3. You know the essence of a magazine and you are able to create your own

Find the timetable of the classes at the heading 'Timetable'.

Make sure to use your own words. You can take pictures from the internet or take your own.

Click on the video below to see the content of the magazine explained in detail.

Before you can start working on your magazine, you have to make a plan of approach. Go to the heading 'Layout magazine: Plan of approach', here you can find the steps you have to begin with during the first class.

Plan of approach

Before you start writing articles for your magazine, you should make a plan of approach with your group of four.

Write down what you are going to do as a group. Divide articles and make sure everyone does the same amount of work. Describe this in your plan of approach. The plan of approach has to include who is going to write which article. You can find the articles you have to write at the heading 'Content'

Click on the link and fill in the plan of approach. Each group needs to hand in one plan of approach.

When you submitted the plan of approach, you are going to take a look at the 'Theory'.

Theory

How to write an article?

In this video, there will be an explanation on how to write an article.

Magazine looks

How are you able to recognise a magazine?

Firstly, the cover page is something that really describes a magazine. On the cover page, you can usually find multiple pictures, a lot of different colours and different fond styles. The cover page usually includes "spoilers" of the articles that you can find in the magazine. These spoilers get the readers interested in the articles and make them buy it quicker.

Articles in magazines usually deal with the latest news and trends. Articles have creative designs, the articles are not as default as a news paper.

What is also typical for a magazine, is that the writers tries to engage their readers. This can be done in multiple ways. Pieces that can be included for more reader engagement are horoscopes, puzzles, or quizzes.

Use of language

While writing an article, you have to think about a few basic rules.

1) Make sure your language is clear and simple. You do not want to confuse your readers by adding too much unnecessary information. "Clear and simple" does not mean that you can not use difficult words.

2) Think about the length of the sentence. Try not to use more than 20 words in each sentence. This will also contribute to simple and clear sentences.

3) Try to use the active voice instead of the passive voice in your writing. Watch this clip to see the difference between active and passive voice.

When you have looked at all the theory, you can go to the 'Exercises' to check yourself.

Exercises

Article structure

Before you do this exercise, make sure you have seen the YouTube video 'Magazine project - How to write an article?' under the headline 'Layout magazine'

We are going to discuss the answers in class.

Active vs. passive voice

Final product

When everyone is done writing their articles, you are going to bundle it into a magazine. Before you do this, you are going through the checklist.

  • Did you include a front page and an index?
  • Check the headline 'Layout magazine: Content', did you include every article in your magazine?
  • Does every page have a page number?
  • Read through the articles and look for spelling mistakes - correct the mistakes.
  • Print out the magazines and bundle the pages, this is your magazine. Bring it to class.

Did you go through the checklist?

Well done! You are done with the magazine project.

Make sure to fill in the Self-evaluation

Self-evaluation

At the end of this project, you have to fill in this form. This will help you to think critically about your own work on this project. You can also share your thoughts about this WikiWijs.
