Wonder

Wonder

A wonderful welcome!

This platform is to help students develop their knowledge of the book: Wonder.

It focuses on the Wonder assignments for the Wonder portfolio.

There is a Wonder test included to help you remember everything we have read so far, your not obligated to do this test.

Lastly, the homework assignments are at the bottom of this platform, so you know which assignments you have to fulfil for your Wonder portfolio!

I hope this helps you all to succeed.

Why is this wonderful?

This platform will help you create your Wonder portfolio. It helps you to reach your goals on your own without needing the teacher. Responsibility and working alone is the main reason for the portfolio.

The portfolio focuses on the personal growth of a student. We want to see how you have improved since semester 1 in writing.

We are currently reading Wonder in class and the content of this platform will help you to write your assignments for the Wonder portfolio. I hope this will help you to have your portfolio done perfectly.

Remember to use full sentences in your portfolio and try to have fun!

Use your imagination while writing these assignments and if you're stuck on something, please try to approach classmates (they usually have the answers to your questions and know a lot more than you think).

At the end when you're done, don't forget to fill in the Google Forms. This will help me a lot to get feedback and progress for my reflection.

The learning objectives of this wikiwijs are that:

  • you can create your Wonder portfolio on your own
  • you will develop your writing skills
  • you will practise with different, creative assignments
  • you will develop your reading comprehension

Beneath the Wonder portfolio you will find all the assignments you have to include in your portfolio.

Wonderful test

To practice if you know what we have talked about so far there is a socrative test.

  • The room name is: BHAGGOE113

You won't get an actual grade for this, but if you want your result, you could always approach me to know how well you did. If you get a good grade back, you will know how well you have written your assignments and remembered the book.

This test will help you to remember all the topics we have read during the lessons. If you forgot to write one assignment then this is a good way to refresh you memory before starting to write!

Wonder portfolio

August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a severe facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school.

Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, Auggie wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past his extraordinary face. Wonder begins from Auggie's point of view, but soon switches to include the perspectives of his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These voices converge to portray a community as it struggles with differences, and challenges readers, both young and old, to wonder about the true nature of empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship, and—ultimately—kindness. Auggie is a hero for the ages, one who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

Wonder has been a New York Times bestseller for over 5 years in a row (with over 140 weeks as #1). It's received numerous national and international awards, including being one of Time magazines 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time (January, 2015), and USA Today's Top 100 bestsellers. The movie Wonder is scheduled to be released on November 17th, 2017.

IMPORTANT!

Don't forget to include the following:

  • Front page
  • Your name
  • Table of content
  • Assignments
  • Conclusion (what did you think of this portfolio?)

All the assignments need to be included in your Wonder portfolio.

There is an explanation of the assignment above the page, so you can check what you have to do. If you don't understand the explanation, you can always ask your classmates or approach me via Teams.

Assignment 10

Reading: Wonder page 97 - 107

Chapter: Part Four Jack till chapter: Private School

Now that we have gotten a bit of story-telling from Jack's perspective you can also see how he has developed from his first thoughts about Auggie into wanting to be his friend.

Every chapter has a headline at the top of the page and I want you to pick three headlines from Jack's perspective and recreate them. Create a new headline!

So, instead of the known chapter: Fortune Favors the Bold you could choose to name the chapter: Spinning the Truth. Don't forget to elaborate on why you would name the chapter like this.

Keep in mind that the names of the chapters have to collaborate with the story-telling.

Assignment 11

Reading: Wonder page 107 - 121

Chapter: Private School till chapter: Back from Winter Break

NOVEL PODCAST PROJECT

(You will be assigned to a group to work on this project to create a podcast).

The podcast must include the following:

  • A catchy name and catchy introduction to the podcast
  • What Wonder is about and if they see the novel differently from the start
  • A discussion with key elements such as; character (Jack Will), his plot, conflict, etc.
  • What you felt during the chapters
  • End with something authentic and creative

This is also a good roleplay, because someone from your group needs to be Jack Will, and someone else can be the interviewer. Divide the roles in your groups and think about who you want to be in the podcast.

It's no problem if your group decides to have different topics in the podcast. Work together on making this podcast and have fun! Include everyone from your group, because you need the teamwork.

Assignment 12

Chapter: Part Five Justin till chapter: Part Six August

Dear Diary READING TASK

Place yourself in the shoes of one of the characters you have just read about and write a diary entry of a key moment from the story.

Try to choose a moment in the story in which the character has plenty of interaction and emotion to share in a diary entry.

Your diary entry should be around a page in length and contain information you learned from the book when the character was in that specific place and time.

Remember when you are writing a diary entry you are writing it from a first-person perspective. It is usually but not always written in the present tense.

Wonderworks

You are doing the assignments for fun and yourself, you are doing it to develop your writing skills and be creative. I will personally check to see if you have understood the assignment when you hand it in.

You can upload the assignments on Teams under Wonder portfolio.

  • The Wonder portfolio needs to be hand in no later than 25th of March (end of 2nd semester).
  • Every assignment needs to be in the Wonder portfolio.

I hope you had fun while making these :)

Wondrous evaluation

Wondering after finishing

Now that you have finished everything for Wonder you must wonder why you have done all these assignments?

We are now almost done with reading Wonder and I hope these assignments have helped you to think about what Auggie, his family, and friends have been through their entire life. You have dealt with empathy, friendship, loyalty, and most importantly bonding with the characters. Each character has told you a different story which makes you understand that you also have an unique story and-that is worth telling.

These assignments helped you to develop your writing skills and collaborating skills. You have worked individually and together very well!

My teaching goals were:

  • The students learn different strategies to develop their English vocabulary.
  • The students learn how to look for information in English articles or papers, and to judge if its appropriate to use.
  • The students learn how to communicate in writing to other people.
  • The students learn what role English plays internationally, but also locally.
