Today's Plan

As you guys can probably already guess, we're going to talk about fiction today. There are many different types of fiction. Furthermore, we are going to try to map a story. Afterward, you will get the chance to write your own story according to the theory of mapping a story. 

Goals

  • At the end of this lesson, you have some general and less common knowledge about the classic that is Harry Potter.  
  • At the end of this lesson, you can map a short fiction story. 
  • At the end of this lesson, you can write clearly and in detail about imagined events, indicating the connection between ideas in a clear coherent text.

Fiction

What is fiction?

Fiction is a form of storytelling, in which something is created in the imagination of the author. A work of fiction never claims to tell a true story instead, it immerses us in experiences in adventures/situations we may never experience in real life. It introduces us to people we would have never met in real life and takes us to places we may never have visited in real life. 

What is made up in a fictional work?

The author invents the story, makes up the characters, the plot or storyline, the dialogue, and on some occasions even the setting. However, not all works of fiction are completely made up. 

Types of fiction

  • historical fiction --> features real events or people but with an invented storyline
  • science fiction --> functions around real scientific theories but with a made-up plot
  • fantasy fiction --> anything that could not exist in our world 
  • realistic fiction -->  stories that actually could have happened, these stories closely resemble real life

Practice Level 2

We all are familiar with the story of Harry Potter. In this assignment, you are going to write an alternative ending for the story in 500 words. Whether this ending is for one particular movie/book or the franchise as a whole is up to you. 

Practice Level 3

We all are familiar with the story of Harry Potter. In this assignment, you are going to rewrite the story from the perspective of a different character, preferably from the dark side (death either, Voldemort, the ministry of magic). Your story can't be longer than 500 words. Whether this rewrite is for one particular movie/book or the franchise as a whole is up to you.
