Conjunctions

Conjunctions are words like 'and', 'or' and 'but'.
They are used to connect different sentences and/or words.

Examples

  • The animal is large but timid.
  • Is this a sheep or a goat?
  • It's cold, wet and windy today.
  • A cat and its kittens.
  • Slow but steady
  • A horse, a zebra or a donkey?

Other words that use words as conjunctions are: for, nor, yet and so

Examples

  • He is gambling with his health, for he has been smoking far too long.
  • They do not gamble, nor do they smoke.
  • They gamble, yet they don't smoke.
  • He gambled well last night, so he smoked a cigar to celebrate.

Some conjunctions occur in combination.

Examples

  • He is not only handsome, but he is also brilliant.
  • Both the cross country team and the swimming team are doing well.
  • Just as many Americans love basketball, so many Canadians love ice hockey.
  • Whether you stay or go is your decision.
