Preparation

Before we can describe music, we must learn what music genres are. While there are many types, this video gives examples for some of them:

Describing music

Emotions

Now that we know about music genres, let us talk about how to describe music! When it comes to music, we can use emotions to describe songs. What you feel is the emotion that .

For example:

  • I like pop music because it sounds happy.
  • I can't stand jazz, it makes me feel bored.
  • Heavy metal can sound angry at times.

Traits

However, you can also describe the sound itself. These traits say something about the song, unlike emotions. Here are some more examples:

  • This song sounds very soft.
  • I wish this song were faster. I do not like slow songs.
  • I have never heard anything like this. It sounds distinct.

Let's combine them!

Of course, it is possible to combine emotions and description of sounds together.

  • It has a gentle sound, making me feel warm.
  • Heavy metal can sound angry and loud.

Exercises

Exercise 1

Exercise 2

Now it's time for a Quizlet live game! Enter the code seen on the screen and join the game. The goal is to answer the questions correctly.

If you performed well during the game or thought it was easy, you can select the challenge exercise! For those who struggled with the game or want to practice more, select extra practice.

Since a quiz will be held at the end of the lesson, it might be a good idea to practice the words. Click on this link to be taken to the site of Quizlet. There, you can practice words when you select "leren" or read through them.

When you feel confident about knowing the words, you can do the challenge exercise.

Exercise ADVANCED

If you have already finished all the questions, you can do the following exercise to prepare yourself for the quiz.

Who: Alone or in pairs.

What: Answer some questions about music.

How: Pairs will take turns asking each other questions while speaking. When working alone, write down the answers in word and mail them to me.

Finished? Give each other feedback if you are working in pairs or come up with your own questions.

The questions

  • What kind of music do you like? Why?
  • What kind of music do you dislike? Why?
  • Is there any song that makes you feel strong?
  • Is there any song that makes you feel emotional?
  • If you were a musician, what kind of songs would you make? Why?

Exercise EXTRA

If you need some additional practise, you can do the following exercise:

Who: Alone.

What: Practise with words that describe music.

How: By playing the game on Quizlet. Keep playing until you understand everything!

Infinite playlist

Because we have some time left, we will play Infinite Playlist. If you struggled with today's lesson, you can even play this at home for more practise. Just remember to have fun!

Now, pair up with your neighbour and read through the rules to prepare yourself for the game.

How to play Infinite Playlist:

  • One person (in this case, the teacher) will prepare a playlist of songs
  • Decide who goes first
  • You will get to hear 10 seconds of a song
  • The first person has to say a sentence describing the song with at least one word
  • If they succeed, they score a point and it's the next person's turn who has to describe a different song
  • Whoever scores the most points wins!

Rules

  • Words cannot be repeated. For example, if someone used soft once, it can no longer be used
  • Songs cannot be repeated either
