Adverbs

Adverbs

Welcome

Welcome everyone, today we're going to be talking about your actions, what do you? How do you do it? When do you do it? Before we start on that however we'll do a quick refresh on adjectives so we can build up from there.

This wikiwijs is meant for students of the second year HAVO/VWO

Goals

After this lesson you'll have refreshed your knowledge of adjectives and know how to turn them into adverbs.

After this lesson you can describe how you do things using adverbs.

Types of words & adjectives

Reviewing the basics

Adjectives and nouns

Nouns and adjectives.

What are nouns?

Nouns are words that are used to represent a person, place or thing. Everything you can see, talk about, or touch are nouns. For instance a table is a noun. A nurse is a noun. In Dutch we would call these zelfstandige naamwoorden.

Another way to recognise nouns is if you can place a, an, or the, in front of the word.

  • The table, a table.
  • The nurse, a nurse.
  • The hour, an hour.

What are adjectives?

Adjectives are used to describe a noun. Using the previous examples, the table could become the old table. Old here is an adjective to describe the noun table. Adjectives can go into different positions of a sentence.

  1. The old table. You're giving the table a quality, in this case old.
  2. John is upset. When there is a linking verb, in this case to be the adjective comes after the linking verb.
  3. Someone interesting. Here we're giving someone a quality, in this case interesting. You will usually find the adjective after a pronoun. (She, he, it, them, someone, something, etc. In Dutch we call these voornaamwoorden.)

The rules

Adverbs are usually formed by placing –ly after an adjective

Slow -> slowly, beautiful -> beautifully

Some adverbs are irregular

Good -> well

If the adjective ends with ‘y’ the ‘y’ changes into ‘i’ before adding –ly

Example: Angry -> angrily

If the adjective ends with –able, –ible or –le

The ‘e’ changes into ‘y’

Example: terrible -> terribly

If the adjective ends with –ic

Add –ally

Example: artistic -> artistically

Adverbs are usually placed after the verb.

He speaks clearly

When there is an object, the adverb is usually placed after the verb + object.

Adverbs are never placed between object and verb

I read the book quickly (Correct)

I read quickly the book (Incorrect)

Sometimes adverbs are placed at the beginning of a sentence.

Quickly, I changed my opinion

I quickly changed my opinion

Assignment 2

Now that you've had some practice using images, it's time for you to describe your own actions! Together with your neighbour start describing things you do and how you do them. For example, if you play video games, how do you play video games? Do you play them well? Poorly?

Describe five different actions you do throughout the week using adverbs and post them on the padlet.
