Introduction
Dear students,
The Dutch Revolt, also known as the Eighty Years' War, is a very important moment in Dutch history. During this time the Low Countries became independent from the Spanish crown, becoming an independent republic. The economy flourished, moving into the so called 'Golden Age'. But what exactly happened in this time of war in the the sixteenth and seventeenth century?
Your teacher will first introduce this topic during the lessons. You will get to know the most influential historical figures of that time and you will learn why the Dutch Revolt started: centralisation versus privileges, religious conflict. The most important events will be introduced as well. After those lessons you will start with this assignment. First you will conduct some research about one of the events. This work will be done in pairs.
You will have 5 lessons and homework time to work on this assignment before you have to hand in your final product in Google Classroom.
You will create and work in the Google Docs file with the title: The Dutch revolt - the name of your class - your name
Our tips before you start this assignment?
- Always write down the sources you have used (source annotation);
- Write your texts in your own words;
- Check regulary with your teacher if your choices are well considered and if your progress is sufficient.
Have fun, good luck and 'break a leg'!

Step 1: event
Learning goals:
you can explain an event from the Dutch revolt from different viewpoints (the different sides in the conflict of the Dutch Revolt).
Step by step instructions:
1. You and a classmate choose an event. Check with your teacher if this is OK.
2. Next, you search for sources about this event. Start with the book, then find sources online. Find at least six and note down the URL (website link) in your work document.
3. Now, you will write a piece of text about this event.
The two main questions you try to answer:
Why was this such an important event in the Dutch revolt?
How did the two sides of the conflict experience/think about this event? (for example, the Spanish and the Dutch)?
To answer that question, you must find and describe the answer to the subquestions
- what was it?
- when and where did it happen?
- who were involved?
- why did it happen?
- what were the consequences?
Make sure that you describe the event from different points of view. For example: Philip II might experience things differently compared to his halfsister Margaretha of Parma.
For this, you use your book and the six sources.
4. Check your text for English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Amount of words: 300.
5. Refer to the sources in the right way. Your teacher will explain this to you.

Step 2: profile
Learning goals:
You can describe how different people viewed the Revolt in different ways and why.
Step by step instructions:
1. You and a classmate choose an two people that were involved in the event you chose at step 1. Check with your teacher if the chosen people are ok, before you continue. Make sure you choose to people who were on opposite sides of the Conflict.
2. Each of you now works seperately on one of the people, for which you create a historical profile.
Find three good sources about the person and note down the URL (website link) in your work document. Use your book as well, the past paragraph of chapter 2 contains valuable information about many people involved in the Dutch Revolt.
3. Now, you will write a profile about your person.
The main question you try to answer:
What was this person's view of the Dutch Revolt?
To answer that question, you must find and describe the answer to the subquestions
- What did the person look like? Find a proper picture/portrait (include the source).
- What was his/her full name?
- What did the person say? Find a historical quote from this person (include the source).
- What were his/her dreams/ambitions?
- What were the basic facts of his/her life? Write a small biography.
- What was his/her view of the event you chose? Describe his/her perspective.
- How was your person involved in the event?
- How did the event affect/influence your person?
For this, you use your book and the three sources.
4. Check your profile for English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
5. Refer to the sources in the right way. Your teacher will explain this to you.
6. Check each other's work for content (did he/she answer all the questions?) and English grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Step 3: final product and presentation
Learning goal:
You can create a product of your own choosing and show this to your classmates.
Step by step instructions:
1. Choose the form of your product. Some options:
- Movie (iMovie, animation, etc.)
- Comic / Cartoon
- Diary
- (Role)play
- Interview (live, filmed or as part of a newspaper)
- Newspaper (with a news article, background story and interview)
Check with your teacher if your idea is suitable for this assignment.
2. Your product should present the information from step 1 (event) and step 2 (profiles) in an accesible and attractive way. For example: if you create a very cool video that contains hardly any information, it is not a great final product.

1) HAND IN your own and personal 'Dutch Revolt' Google Document and your final product in Google Classroom.
2) PRESENT your final product in class. Your teacher will decide the order of the presentations.
Your teacher will grade your work and final product within ten working days after the presentation.

Finish!
