Past Simple

•Tense focuses on the past.

•Used when describing events which have already happened.

•With the past simple there are often time indicators in sentences.

 

How to form the past simple and rulings

 

Regular verb + ed

•Infinitive + ed

Examples:

(to) spoil + ed --> Spoiled

 

Regular verb + d

verbs where the infinitive already ends in -e. Just add -d.

(to) smile + d --> smiled

 

Regular verbs ending in Y

If the -y is preceded by a vowel just add -ed.

- (to) stay + ed --> stayed

 

If the -y is preceded by a consonant replace -y by -ied.

(to) try --> tried

Past continuous

Past continuous

 

Use:

  • Past tense
  • Indicate something has been going on for a while in the past
  • Indicate order of multiple actions at once in the past
  • Indicate one action interrupted another in the past, usually this combines the past continuous with the past simple
  • Signal words: when, while, all of a sudden, at the same time

 

Example:´: I was playing a game when my brother walked in my room

 

Form:

Past continuous always consits of:

was/were + infinitive + -ing

 

  1. If the infinitve ends with an -e, replace the -e with -ing: ´Dancing(dance), becoming(become), whistling(whistle)
  2. If the infintive ends with a consonant, double the final consonant: hitting(hit), sitting(sit)
  3. if the infinitive ends with -ie, replace the -ie with -y: Dying(die), lying(lie)
