Introduction

Welcome to the third theme of English
This theme is about Family and friends

How?
You are going to practise your writing, reading, listening and speaking skills.

What?
You are going to talk about yourself and your family in English.
You are also going to listen to people who talk about their relatives. You are going to use nouns and plurals,  the articles a/an and the correct word order. Also you will going to use the present continuous.

After the assignments in the Lessons you are going to do the Finishing touch; the final projects.

Getting started

You have just started the theme Family and friends.
You will find different things to watch, to listen to, to read and of course to do.
There are videos, recordings, pictures, photos, texts and assignments.
There are different types of assignments. Some of them you have to do on your own, others you are doing in a group.

At the end of those group assignments you are going to discuss the answers in your group. Some assignments will be checked by the computer.

Can do

In this theme you will focus on the following 'can do' statements.
In dit thema ga je je richten op de volgende leerdoelen.

Luisteren

  • Je kunt vertrouwde woorden en basiszinnen begrijpen die jezelf, jouw familie en directe concrete omgeving betreffen, wanneer de mensen langzaam en duidelijk spreken.

Lezen

  • Je kunt namen, woorden en zeer eenvoudige zinnen begrijpen, bijvoorbeeld in mededelingen, op posters en in korte teksten.

Gesprekken voeren

  • Je kunt deelnemen aan een eenvoudig gesprek over jezelf en je familie. Je gesprekspartner spreekt vrij langzaam. Hij of zij herhaalt af en toe zinnen. Je gesprekspartner helpt bij het formuleren van wat jij probeert te zeggen. Je kunt eenvoudige vragen stellen en beantwoorden die over een directe behoefte of zeer vertrouwde onderwerpen gaan.

Spreken

  • Je kunt eenvoudige uitdrukkingen en zinnen gebruiken om je familie en vrienden te beschrijven.

Schrijven

  • Je  kunt een stamboom beschrijven en een kort en eenvoudig e-mail bericht schrijven over je familie en een ansichtkaart met de vakantiegroeten.
    Je kunt op formulieren persoonlijke details invullen, bijvoorbeeld mijn naam, nationaliteit en adres noteren op een invulformulier voor het huren van een vakantiehuisje.

Maak daarna de D-toets en beantwoord de evaluatievragen.

Project A: Famous families

You are going to give a presentation on a famous family together with a classmate.

  1. Think of a famous family. They can be real (for example the Dutch royal family) or fictitious (for example The Simpsons). Keep them secret!
  2. Look for information on them, their lifestyle, their social environment (friends etc.) on the internet.
  3. Prepare a presentation of about two minutes, but make sure you do not mention the names of the famous people.
  4. Give the presentation in front of your class.
  5. Did your classmates know which family you chose?

 

Variation: the family can be known (i.e. not secret) and pupils write questions about their own presentations for their classmates to answer.
OR classmates write down questions during the presentation for other classmates to answer.

 

Project B: Holiday cottage

Situation
Situatie

You are at the reception of a holiday park and the receptionist asks you to register.
Je staat bij de receptie van een vakantiepark en de receptionist vraagt je je te registreren.

Fill out the form.
Vul het formulier in.

  • Vul je gegevens en die van je gezinsleden in.
  • Jullie blijven een week.
  • Op dinsdag willen jullie wten afhalen. Geef je bestelling door.
  • Op donderdag willen jullie fietsen huren.

Tip:
Ask two classmates to check your form.
Vraag twee klasgenoten om naar je formulier te kijken.
Listen to your classmates' tips and improve your form.
Luister naar de tips van je klasgenoten en verbeter je formulier.

Assessment

You've done well if:
Je hebt het goed gedaan als:

  • you've used the correct words and phrases in the correct spaces;
    je de juiste woorden en zinnen op de juiste plekken hebt gebruikt;
  • you have included all the elements of the task in your form.
    alle elementen uit de opgave op je formulier staan.

Project C: Holiday greetings

Situation
You are on holiday. You are really enjoying yourself but you do miss your friend.
You write him/her a postcard to tell him/her about your holiday.

Evaluation of the task
You did well if:

  • You greeted your friend.
  • You said how you are and how your holiday is.
  • You made a classmate read your postcard and comment on it.
