Sustainable Rotterdam

Sustainable Rotterdam

Welcome

Dear students of Calvijn Groene Hart,

Welcome to the wikiwijs page of the sustainable Rotterdam project!
U
sing this site you will go through the different steps of the sustainable Rotterdam project for the subjects Geography and Biology.

During this project you will zoom in on a number of sustainable projects in Rotterdam. You learn to answer main and sub questions by doing research. This project prepares you for your 'profielwerkstuk' and the research you need to do on HBO or even University. Each group has to research different topics/projects. So make sure you choose your subjects quickly!

Go through the steps mentioned on the left (You have time to do that during the lessons). Your end product will be a report for geography and biology which you will also present to your class.

Are you already curious about what you will be judged on? Then check the 'Assessment criteria' heading on the left for more information!

Good luck!

Learning objectives of the project

What?

  • Each group investigates a number of projects in Rotterdam with regard to sustainability.
Each group chooses five different projects.

  • You are going to investigate what is sustainable about that project.

  • You conduct a research and answer some main- and sub questions

  • Groupsize is between 3-5 people.

Why?

During this cross-curricular project you will see that many subject are connected with each other. Now this project is done only for the subject Geography and Biology, but their might be other subjects that have links with this project as well.
By doing this project/research you are already preperaring for further study (HBO / University).

You learn a number of skills that you need for follow-up studies:

  • Presenting

  • Collaboration

  • Writing reports

  • Critical thinking

  • ICT skills

  • Reflection.

How?

You follow the steps described on the left. This will help you to go through the entire research cycle. You will receive help from both the Geography teacher and the Biology teacher.

Research

To do this research you're going to follow a couple of steps. Click on the left to go to the first step. Follow all the steps.

On Friday 24 May you conduct a research in the city of Rotterdam. After that you'll have some time in the lesson to finish the project.

For geography you hand in the report and do a presentation.
For biology you only hand in your report. So you have to print your report 2 times!

Research cycle

Step 1 (Wonder)

In this fieldwork research you will investigate five different sustainable projects. Sustainable development literally means: a way of producing and consuming without environmental exhaustion and environmental pollution and minimizing environmental impact.

There are five different subjects you can choose from for your sustainability research.
Each group chooses a project from each theme. So you will have 5 projects in total.

These are the themes:

  • Buildings (think of modifications to buildings, architecture)

  • Water (water storage, adapted parking garages, water squares)

  • Mobility (moving within the city)

  • Energy (energy efficient, green energy)

  • Green (parks in the city, green roofs/ agriculture on roofs)

To find out more about a specific theme, download the Sustainable Rotterdam app(lication). This is available for free in the Android or Apple store.

Choose 1 location per theme. Have you chosen five locations? Then download the document underneath and fill it in.

When your done. First ask permission from your teacher, if he/she agrees to your locations, then mail the list to your geography and biology teacher.
We don't want to many of the same projects in one class.

After the permission of the teacher you can go to step 2.

Step 2 (Explore)

Formulating a research question is extremely difficult. That's why the teachers have already formulated your main- and sub questions for you.

Main question:

How do your five chosen projects fit in with the sustainable vision of the municipality of Rotterdam?

Sub questions:

  1. What is the municipality of Rotterdam's vision on sustainability?

  2. Which projects have you chosen and why?

  3. Why are the projects sustainable?

  4. What is the connection between the projects and the subject Biology?

  5. What is the connection between the projects and the subject Geography?

  6. Which projects have a connection with both Geography and Biology?

  7. Which project appeals to you most and why?

  8. What do the residents of Rotterdam think of the sustainable project that you choose in question 7? (To answer this question you interview at least 30 inhabitants of Rotterdam and process this in a table / graph)

Step 3 (Investigate)

You can see that there are a lot of sub-questions that lead to the answer on the main question. Copy these sub-questions and investigate. What can you find online? Which questions can you answer before you go on the fieldtrip/excursion?

Get started with answering the first 7 sub-questions. This initial research and the planning for your excursion day must be finished before you go on the excursion. A real research needs to be prepared well!

You will have two lessons to do this. That means that at the end of the second lesson (teacher tells exactly when) you must send a document with your initial research. Questions 1 to 7 can already be answered for a big part.

Question 8 must be examined in the city.

You will carry out an investigation yourself on the day of the excursion (24 May). You will come up with interview questions and conduct interviews with residents. You will also visit all your selected projects. That might mean that you need to make appointments for some of the projects. (For instance if you want to see a green roof on top of a company, or if you want to interview someone). Make your appointments in advance!

Step 4 (Review)

Are you done with your initial research and did you send this to your geography teacher?

Then make a planning for your excursion day on 24 May.

When your done, mail the planning for 24 May, the interviewquestions and the initial research to your geography teacher.

Also put in the mail if you have certain agreements on 24 May. For example, if you are you going to visit a building at noon and get a tour there. Make sure the teachers know where you are on which time during the day.

Make sure you pay enough time to the research. It will be a big part of your Geography and Biology grade.

Excursion (research in the city)

On 24 May 2019 after the 3th hour we go to Rotterdam with all the 3H en 3V classes. You have the rest of the day to conduct your research.

3H has to be at the tram on Middeldijkerplein on 11.15.

3V has to be at the tram on Middeldijkerplein on 11.30.

You have to make sure you have an OV-chipkaart with enough 'saldo' on it.

At the end of the day you will get money from your teacher to compensate your travels.

Assessment criteria

This project counts 2x for period 4 in geography and 1x in biology. It is therefore important to know what we look at when we judge your report/presentation.

Your grade consists of different parts. The teacher will hand over a form with the points distributed on it at the end.

The following components are taken into account:

  • Collaboration within the groups

  • Preparatory lessons (active in class, submit form on time, main- and sub questions correct)

  • Initial research and planning excursion day (Is it on time, Content).

  • Excursion (What did you visit? Did you gather enough information? Did you hand in your report on time?)

  • The report (layout, content, creativity, logbook, sources, evaluation). Also see heading 'report'.

  • The presentation (presentation skills, content presentation). Also see heading 'presentation'.

Report (Create)

The report consists of the following sections:

  • Cover Sheet

  • Preface

  • Main- and sub-questions

  • Initial research

  • Results of your research in the city

  • Conclusion

  • Evaluation

  • Logbook

  • Sources

Below some additional explanation for some of the sections:

Conclusion

A conclusion is reached at the end of the report. In the conclusion you answer the main question and the sub questions. These questions must be answered with the help of literature research (in the classroom) and fieldwork research (during the excursion). This conclusion must be at least 300 words.

Evaluation

Write in your evaluation what you have learned from doing this project.

Everyone does this for themselves.

  • What did you know about sustainability in the city?

  • Did you hear about the projects before?

  • What have you learned from your own project?

  • What have you learned from setting up an investigation?

  • Do you have feedback for the teachers about this assignment?

Logbook

In this research you work together with a number of fellow students. That is why you have to keep a logbook. The intention is that you make clear what you have worked on and how long you have worked on it. As a result, the teacher can also see the division of tasks well.

If one person has done more than the other? Then this must also be clearly stated in your report. You will be assessed for this. So it can happen that there are different grades within one group at the end.

Sources

The naming of sources is very important. Wikipedia, for example, is not a legid source. You may therefore not use this. To combat plagiarism, you therefore also submit your report via SOM. This way we can check whether you have written your own report or whether you have cut and pasted everything.

Presentation (Share)

During period 4 you give a presentation. The presentation is part of your grade for geography.

The following parts must be included in the presentation:

  • What were your main- and sub questions?

  • Which projects have you visited?

  • What did you do on the excursion day? What went well / less well?

  • What were your results and your answer to the main question?

  • What have you learned from it?

Your presentation must take at least 5 minutes. The maximum time is 10 minutes. You are allowed to show one video clip (not more than 2 minutes).

Please note that presentation skills are also important! It is important that you know what you are talking about and know your story by heart. So no reading from paper!

Hand in

You submit your report both on SOM and on paper.

For geography your grade consists of the report and your presentation (it counts 2x).

For biology your grade only consists of your report (it counts 1x).
