Introduction

The subject of this double period is school supplies.

  • Form groups of three or four pupils.

Discuss the following questions in your group:

  • What do you think of the price of school supplies?
  • What do your parents think of it?
  • Do you often argue about the price of school supplies with your parents?
  • Do you think course books should be free for students?

Make a shopping list of school supplies. What do you need to buy?

Step 1 - Listening

School supplies
You are going to listen to a conversation between a girl and her father. They are talking about
buying supplies for school.

  • Read the questions.
  • Listen to the recording.
  • Do assignment 1.
  • Listen again and do assignment 2.

Questions

  • What does the girl need?
  • Which of the school supplies the girl needs does the father not want to buy?
  • What does the father call the palm pilot and the calculator?
  • Why do you think he calls them different names?
  • Where can you buy the calculator?
  • How much does the calculator cost? How much rebate (= geld terug) can they get?
  • How does the girl convince her father to buy the calculator?
  • Does the girl get an ice cream? Why (not)?

  • Do assignment 1.(First on your own, than compare your answers in your group).
  • Read the text.
  • Do assignment 2.

Superintendent Says Kids Must Have Pens, Paper

September 16, 2002: WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Pens, paper and notebooks are usually mandatory in every high school.

The superintendent said that students must have school supplies like paper and a notebook in order to do their work.

'When I spent the first week walking in the school, 3 to 5 percent didn't have anything, and that upset me,' said Dr. Gwendolyn Cooke, the superintendent.

Although letters were sent out two weeks ago, many parents said they didn't know their kids were supposed to bring the notebooks to school. As a result, many students couldn't enter the school.

'Maybe they mailed them, but we did not receive them, through the kids or through the mail,' parent Carolyn Jones said.

'My child has notebooks,' parent John Mikel said. 'Her lockers are just down the hall. She could have gotten her notebooks from there.'

Some of the students are also upset over the dress code -- no more white T-shirts will be allowed.

Tip!
There are many ways to study vocabulary. You can read the words aloud or copy them. The most important rule is never to spend more than 10 minutes studying words. Every minute you spend longer is a waste of time.

Now you are going to try to have a conversation with someone else.

  1. Find someone to work with and use the speech card A or B on page two.
  2. Write down a couple of words to help you during the conversation.
  3. Practise your conversation at least twice.

After practising twice, do the following things:

  1. Find another pair to work with.
  2. Act out your conversation.
  3. Let them act out their conversation and write down feedback for them.

  5. Discuss what things were good and what you can do better next time.
