What's the difference between the present simple and the present continuous?

On this website you will find information and explanation about the present simple and continuous and learn when to use which tense by practicing. After the end test, you will be able to use the different tenses in the right way.

Present Simple vs. Past Simple

Present Simple

Form

Positive: I live in London. My sister lives in Madrid. My parents live in Glasgow.

Negative: I do not live in an apartment. He does not live in a house. We do not live in a block of flats.

Questions: Do you work in an office? Does she work from home? Were do they work?

 

Use

  • Facts, permanent situtations and opinions: The sun doesn't go round the earth. Cows don't eat meat. A red light means 'Stop'.
  • Regular actions, habits and routines: He works there once a month. Do the children go out in the evenings? No, they watch TV.
  • Describing films, plays and books: The story takes place in the United States. The main character works on a farm.

Present Continuous

Form

Positive: I'm having a lunch. He's watching TV. They're running away.

Negative: I'm not watching TV. She isn't having lunch. We aren't staying there.

Questions: Are you watching TV? Is she running away? What are they having for lunch?

 

Use

  • Actions happening now or around now: Hurry up. The taxi's waiting. Trudi's studying animal behaviour.
  • Temporary situations: We're staying at my mother's while the builders are repairing the roof of our house.
  • Changes and trends: Harry's been really ill but he's getting better now. Prices are going up again.
  • Describing pictures: The woman in the middle is holding a cup.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Permanent situations:

Janice lives in London with her husband and children.

Temporary situations, for a limited period of time:

But Janice is staying in a hotel this weekend.

Time expressions: today, this week, at the moment

Regular actions, habits and routines:

Janice is a pilot. She flies all over the world.

Actions that are happening at/around the time we are speaking:

Janice is flying to Sydney today.

Things we do not expect to change:

Pilots usually train for about two years to get their flying licence.

Something that is changing:

More and more women are training to become pilots these days.

To describe events in a book, play or film:

The story starts in Madrid. The main character lives there. One day, he goes out and…

To describe what is happening in a photo or picture:

That’s my niece in the photo. She’s riding her brother’s bike.
