We both had pasta to start and for the main course my wife ordered a steak and I chose fish. For dessert, we both ate a chocolate cake topped with fresh cream. Delicious!

My boyfriend loves spicy food so this Indian restaurant was perfect. The waiters were all really friendly and polite, and they played traditional sitar music which was very relaxing. I chose a mild beef curry but my boyfriend had a lamb 'vindaloo' - he also drank 2 liters of water!!

The Kid Who Cooked
Two years ago, Elliot West was more or less just like any other ten-year-old kid. The only thing that made Elliot any different was that he loved cooking.
But everything changed for Elliot one day when he saw an interesting announcement on the Internet. A TV show called Junior Kitchen Star was holding a contest for kids who enjoyed cooking and baking. Elliot was excited. Before reading about this show, he hadn’t known there were other kids who enjoyed the same hobby as he did. He applied to enter the contest immediately.
To qualify for the contest, Elliot had to win a preliminary round against ten other kids from his town. He won easily with a dish of pasta and scallops. He was in the competition!
Whereas the preliminary round had been easy, the televised rounds were incredibly difficult. Elliot had to cook against the clock and with limited ingredients. In one challenge, Elliot had to serve up food for a restaurant full of people. The judges were tough and when they had a negative comment about Elliot’s food, he had to try really hard not to cry.
While taking part in the competition, the contestants were given cooking lessons from top chefs and this gave Elliot a chance to learn even more about cooking at the highest level.
Week by week, the other competitors were eliminated until finally only two were left for the final. One was Elliot and the other was Charles, the son of Pierre La Fontaine, the famous French chef. Over three grueling hours, Elliot and Charles each created and prepared a seven-course meal for the judges. It was very close, but the judges all said they had loved Elliot’s roast goose served with a red wine sauce. Elliot was declared the winner!
After winning the contest, Elliot’s life did not go back to normal. In fact, he became something of a celebrity. He traveled to schools to give cooking demonstrations and produced his own cooking show on YouTube.
Elliot is twelve now. He’s still just a kid, but he has a very bright future indeed.

Fast Food
About half the young people in America are heavier than they should be. That’s because they eat the wrong food, or they eat too much or too often. Or all three!
American doctors keep warning about ‘overweight kids’ and some things are changing, very slowly. However, a lot of habits are very hard to change. Fast Food restaurants, for example, are as popular as ever, at all times of the day. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and French fries are still the most popular things to eat.
The problem is that they are high in calories and fat. Another problem is to encourage children and teenagers to eat their greens.“I often come in for a burger after school,’’ says Billy, a teenager from San Francisco. “They are so tasty and cost only a dollar! We also come here because it’s a good place to sit and chat!”
But eating too much is not the only reason why people get fat - drinking too much has the same effect. In summer it’s so easy to drink too much. In America, people drink lots of soda pop, such as colas and 7Up. The reason is simple. They are on sale everywhere: in shops, cafés…. And compared to Europe, it’s very cheap. But each small soda contains spoonfuls of sugar. No wonder people get fat!

School Dinners
Do you have lunch at school? Do you like having lunch at school? School dinners (that means ‘lunch’) are a hot topic in the UK these days and there are lots of different opinions about what young people eat at lunchtime. Some people think that school meals are unhealthy, some people say that they are much better than in the past and others say that midday meals should be free for all school children.
What is a school dinner?
A typical school dinner costs about 2 pounds a day for a secondary pupil in the UK. There is usually a main course, a dessert, and a drink. Parents often pay in advance online. School dinners must include food groups such as fruit and vegetables, protein (for example meat, fish or cheese) and carbohydrate (for example rice or pasta). There are rules about how the food is prepared, for example, there are limits on the quantity of fried food.
Neverseconds – the school dinners blog
Martha Payne, from Scotland, started a blog called Neverseconds about her school dinners when she was just nine years old. She posts photographs of her lunch every day and gives the food a grade out of ten. The grade depends on the quality and quantity of the food and how healthy it is. She doesn’t always give good grades. Her complaints include too much-fried food, small quantities and hair in the food (yuck!). Many people read her blog and young people from all over the world post pictures of their school meals on Neverseconds.
Jamie Oliver, the celebrity British chef, is passionate about school dinners. He thinks that they need to be healthier and tastier. Jamie helped to promote Martha’s blog by tweeting about it and Neverseconds became very popular, very quickly on social media websites. On the blog, Martha also collects money for charity. The money is used to provide food for more than 600,000 poor children around the world.
Do all children have school dinners?
More than a third of British school pupils have school dinner. Some take a packed lunch, prepared at home. Others either have lunch at home or eat at nearby takeaway restaurants. We asked some young people to tell us about what they eat at lunchtime on school days.
I have school dinners most days but I take a packed lunch on Fridays. This Friday I had a cheese sandwich, tomatoes, crisps, a chocolate bar and an apple juice.
Tom, 14, Dorset
Today we had pizza, salad, then an apple for dessert. I get free school meals because my mum and dad are unemployed.
Rae, 13, Hathersage
I had fish and chips today. I went to the chip shop near school with some friends. Sometimes I take a packed lunch and sometimes my parents give me money to buy lunch.
Theo, 15, Cambridge
I have school dinner every day. Today I had roast chicken, carrots, green beans, and potatoes. For dessert I had cake.
Sarah, 14, Birmingham
The future for school dinners
There are plans to examine school dinners in the UK and look at ways to make them better. Henry Dimbleby and John Vincent started 'Leon', a chain of restaurants which aim to sell healthy fast food. The British government has asked the two restaurant owners to collect information about school dinners and see how they can be improved. Perhaps complaints about lunchtime food in British schools will soon be a thing of the past.

The Gingerbread Man
Once upon a time, there was an old man, an old woman, and a little boy. One morning the old woman made some gingerbread in the shape of a man. She added icing to his hair and clothes, and little blobs of dough for his nose and eyes. When she put him in the oven to bake, she said to the little boy, “You watch the gingerbread man while your grandfather and I go out to work in the garden.”
So the old man and the old woman went out and began to dig potatoes, and left the little boy to tend the oven. But he started to daydream and didn’t watch it all of the time. All of a sudden he heard a noise, and he looked up and the oven door popped open, and out of the oven jumped a gingerbread man, and went rolling along end over end towards the open door of the house. The little boy ran to shut the door, but the gingerbread man was too quick for him and rolled through the door, down the steps, and out into the road long before the little boy could catch him.
The little boy ran after him as fast as he could manage, crying out to his grandfather and grandmother, who heard the noise, and threw down their spades in the garden to give chase too. The gingerbread man outran all three a long way, and was soon out of sight, while they had to sit down, all out of breath, on a bank to rest.
On went the gingerbread man, and by-and-by he came to two men digging a well who looked up from their work and called out, “Where ye going, gingerbread man?”
He said, “I’ve outrun an old man, an old woman, and a little boy – and I can outrun you too-o-o!”
“You can, can you? We’ll see about that?” Said they, and so they threw down their picks and ran after him, but couldn’t catch up with him, and soon they had to sit down by the roadside to rest.
On ran the gingerbread man, and by-and-by he came to two men digging a ditch. “Where ye going, gingerbread man?” said they.
He said, “I’ve outrun an old man, an old woman, a little boy, and two well diggers, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”
“You can, can you? We’ll see about that!” said they, and they too threw down their spades, and ran after him. The gingerbread man soon outstripped them also, and seeing they could never catch him, gave up the chase and sat down to rest.
On went the gingerbread man, and by-and-by he came to a bear. The bear said, “Where are ye going, gingerbread man?”
He said, “I’ve outrun an old man, an old woman, a little boy, two well diggers, and two ditch diggers, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”
“You can, can you?” Growled the bear. “We’ll see about that!” He trotted as fast as his legs could carry him after the gingerbread man, who never stopped to look behind him. Before long the bear was left so far behind that he saw he might as well given up the hunt at the start, so he stretched himself out by the roadside to rest.
On went the gingerbread man and by-and-by he came to a wolf. The wolf said, “Where ye going, gingerbread man?”
He said, “I’ve outrun an old man, an old woman, a little boy, two well diggers, two ditch diggers, and a bear, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”
“You can, can you?” Snarled the wolf. “We’ll see about that!” So he set into a gallop after the gingerbread man, who went on and on so fast, that the wolf too saw there was no hope of overtaking him, and he too lay down to rest.
On went the gingerbread man, and by-and-by he came to a fox that lay quietly in a corner of the fence. The fox called out in a sharp voice, but without getting up, “Where ye going, gingerbread man?”
He said: “I’ve outrun an old man, an old woman, a little boy, two well diggers, two ditch diggers, a bear, and a wolf, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”
The fox said, “I can’t quite hear you, gingerbread man. Won’t you come a little closer?” Turning his head a little to one side.
The gingerbread man stopped his race for the first time, and went a little closer, and called out in a very loud voice, “I’ve outrun an old man, an old woman, a little boy, two well diggers, two ditch diggers, a bear and a wolf, and I can outrun you too-o-o.”
“I still can’t quite hear you. Won’t you come a little closer?” Said the fox in a feeble voice, as he stretched out his neck towards the gingerbread man, and put one paw behind his ear.
The gingerbread man came up close, and leaning towards the fox, screamed out “I’VE OUTRUN AN OLD MAN, AN OLD WOMAN, A LITTLE BOY, TWO WELL DIGGERS, TWO DITCH DIGGERS, A BEAR AND A WOLF, AND I CAN OUTRUN YOU TOO-O-O!”
“You can, can you?” Yelped the fox, and he snapped up the gingerbread man with his sharp teeth in the twinkling of an eye.
